An Overview Of Wind Powered Home Generators

November 15th, 2010

A wind powered home generator could be your answer. These generators can be extremely efficient and a simple way of saving on your home electricity bills. This is a truly renewable energy source, gentle on the environment when compared to the more commonly used and infinitely more expensive fossil fuels like oil, coal, or gas.

Perhaps one of the greatest features of wind powered home generators is that they are simple to assemble yourself. The second best feature is that they can be used pretty much anywhere provided the average wind speed is not less than 10mph.

Could you really do it yourself? Sure! Self assembly is straight forward and all the required parts and accessories; all readily available in a hardware store. An appropriate sized windmill needed to fully serve a standard size house can be put together for as little as $150.

The basic components of a wind powered home generator come down to these four parts:

  1. The Rotor Blades, designed to catch the kinetic energy of the wind and turn it into mechanical energy to rotate the windmill.
  2. The Hub at the center of the blades is the focal point connecting the blades and the motor.
  3. The DC motor then transfers the mechanical energy into electrical energy.
  4. The Battery then stores the electrical energy, ready to be used when you need it.

Of course that is a simplified explanation of how the system works but essentially gives an overview of the basic principles. Finally, a sail or flag must be incorporated on the shaft behind the rotor blades to ensure they are always facing the wind.

It is important to note here that you should not attempt to alter anything in your electricity supply box without first talking to an electrician and once you’ve built your generator any connections to the mains should be completed by a professional. This is both for safety reasons and to ensure you aren’t possibly rendering your house insurance as void.
